About Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina. It is located on the western shore of the estuary of the Río de la Plata, on the southeastern coast of the South American continent. The Greater Buenos Aires constitutes the third-largest conurbation in Latin America, with a population of around thirteen million.

By some measures, Buenos Aires is one of the 20 largest cities in the world. It is, along with Mexico City and São Paulo, one of the three Latin American cities considered an 'alpha city' by the study GaWC5.

Argentina has the first best quality of life in Latin America and Buenos Aires is the most visited city in South America (ahead of Rio de Janeiro) and the second most visited city across Latin America (behind Mexico City). It is also one of the most important, largest and most populous of South American capitals, often referred to as the Paris of the South.

Buenos Aires is a top tourist destination, and is known for its European-style architecture and rich cultural life, with the highest concentration of theatres in the world.

Climate
The climate of Buenos Aires is mild all year round. The mean annual temperature is 18ºC (64.4ºF), making extremely hot and cold days very infrequent. Thus, visitors can enjoy walking around the city in any season.

Customs
Buenos Aires has always been an open-door city. Its inhabitants are called porteños, which makes reference to the fact that the city is a port. Porteños are friendly and very open minded.

Language
The official language is Spanish. Something to note is the use of vos (you) instead of the Spanish tú for informal treatment, and the use of che to address a person.

The porteños easily understand persons who speak Italian and Portuguese. A lot of people speak English, French or other European language.

Religion
Most inhabitants are Roman Catholic. There are Protestant, Orthodox Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Mormon minorities. The city is home to the largest mosque in South America.
